Research

Research is a major element of Norron that is abosolutely necessary to invest in if you hope to finish well in the game. Research points (RPs) can be generated by building universities, or by sending your hero on certain quests. Additionally, the spell Mimir's Well (MW) increases the output of RPs.

Research can be divided into six groupings: City, Economy, Exploration, Mages, Military, and Spy. Each of these groups has three or four research areas you can invest in.

City

Architecture

  • Increases your city's maximum population by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 24,000 research points plus 6,000 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Carpentry

  • Decreases all lumber costs in your city by 1%. This includes building construction lumber costs and ship construction lumber costs, if applicable.
  • Cost: 15,000 research points plus 2,000 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Development

  • Decreases all construction times in your city by 1 hour per level. This includes building construction times as well as ship construction times, if applicable.
  • Cost: 35,000 research points plus 15,000 per level
  • Max Level: 10

Employment

  • Increases your city's available employment by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 20,000 research points plus 4,000 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Economy

Alchemy

  • Increases your city's silver production by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 20,000 research points plus 4,000 per level
  • Max Level: 100

Irrigation

  • Increases your city's food production by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 2,500 per level
  • Max Level: 100

Lumber Processing

  • Increases your city's lumber production by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 2,500 per level
  • Max Level: 100

Metallurgy

  • Increases your city's iron ore production by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 2,500 per level
  • Max Level: 100

Exploration

Explorer's Foresight

  • Decreases the time that it takes for explored land to come in by 1 hour per level (explored land comes in gradually over an 18 hour period by default).
  • Cost: 45,000 research points plus 15,000 per level
  • Max Level: 10

Explorer's Intuition

  • Reduces the amount of silver needed to explore new land by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 20,000 research points plus 3,000 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Explorer's Luck

  • Increases the how often your villagers and/or hero find treasure while out exploring for new land by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 5,000 research points plus 500 per level
  • Max Level: 100

Mages

Heimdall's Guard

  • Each level gives a 5% chance of seeing which city commanded mages to gather information about your city.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 1,000 per level
  • Max Level: 20

Mage Education

  • Each level allows you to command an additional mage. So, for example, a city with level 0 Mage Education would have 0 mages, whereas a city with level 10 Mage Education would have 10 mages. This research area can not be researched by cities that worship a Jotun god, unless that god is Mimir.
  • Cost: 50,000 research points plus 10,000 per level
  • Max Level: 20

Spell Casting

  • Each level of Spell Casting unlocks an additional self spell that your mages (and hero, if your hero is an archmage) are able to cast. The details of these self spells is given on the Spells page of the guide. This research area can not be levelled up by cities that worship a Jotun god, unless that god is Mimir.
  • Cost: 75,000 research points plus 25,000 per level
  • Max Level: 10

Military

Battle Acuity

  • Decreases the training time of military troops in your city by one hour per level - this does not apply to ships.
  • Cost: 35,000 research points plus 15,000 per level
  • Max Level: 10

Battle Prowess

  • Decreases offensive and defensive battle casualties by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 30,000 research points plus 5,500 per level
  • Max Level: 25

Discipline

  • Increases the number of attribute points earned by your hero when gaining a level by 1.
  • Cost: 250,000 research points plus 100,000 per level
  • Max Level: 5

Smithing

  • Decreases the iron ore costs of your city's troops by 1% per level.
  • Cost: 15,000 research points plus 2,500 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Annexation

  • Increases land gained on attack by 1% per level, and increases experience earned on invasion by 2% per level. Note that increased land gains are generated by the game, and that the exta % of land is not removed from the victims total acreage.
  • Cost: 25,000 research points plus 2,500 per level
  • Max Level: 50

Spies

Heimdall's Sheath

  • Each level gives a 5% chance of seeing which city sent spies to your city.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 1,000 per level
  • Max Level: 20

Hoarding

  • Each level reduces the amount of resources stolen from your city by 1%.
  • Cost: 10,000 research points plus 1,500 per level
  • Max Level: 75

Resource Stealing

  • Each level of Resource Stealing unlocks an additional theft mission that your spies (and hero, if your hero is a thief) are able to perform. The details of these missions is given on the Spy Missions page of the guide.
  • Cost: 75,000 research points plus 25,000 per level
  • Max Level: 10

Spy Education

  • Each level allows you to command an additional spy. So, for example, a city with level 0 Spy Education would have 0 spies, whereas a city with level 10 Spy Education would have 10 spies.
  • Cost: 50,000 research points plus 10,000 per level
  • Max Level: 20
